Conservation Programs Manager


The Madison Conservation District (MCD) was established in 1946 to provide local support to natural resource conservation needs throughout Madison County. The MCD serves an area of 1.1 million acres, and focuses on private lands conservation. The mission of the Madison Conservation District is to promote a sustainable, productive and healthy environment through locally-led conservation efforts, and our vision is: A healthy landscape that supports thriving communities, productive agriculture, and sustainable fish and wildlife populations.  We do this through collaboration and coordination with local, state, and national partners to achieve common sense conservation.

Position Description

The Conservation Programs Manager (CPM) is responsible for a diverse workload. The CPM works closely with other MCD employees, and provides support to MCD staff as needed. This position is managed by the MCD Board of Supervisors, but the ideal candidate can work effectively and efficiently with little day-to-day supervision.

The Conservation Programs Manager works to provide technical assistance, financial support, and education and outreach, on a variety of natural resources issues to landowners and residents throughout the District. Therefore, an understanding of priority natural resource topics in Southwestern Montana is important. Additionally, the CPM will work with landowners, agency personnel, and non-profit partners, to identify conservation needs, as well as implement conservation projects and programs to address these needs. This includes various aspects of project management, fundraising and financial management, and community outreach and education.  The position will also represent the MCD in multiple partnerships and collaborative conservation efforts at the local, regional, and statewide scale.

Work Environment: This position requires some field work, but daily operations are based out of the MCD office. The CPM works an average of 40 hours per week, but is expected to work flexible hours when needed. Occasional meeting attendance will be required, including monthly Madison Conservation District board meetings. Occasional travel for meetings, trainings, and conferences is required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Project Management and Conservation Planning

  • Identifying opportunities to plan and implement conservation and restoration activities, particularly efforts related to range health, drought resiliency, and water quality improvement
  • Fundraising, managing, and coordinating conservation and restoration activities
  • Working with Montana Department of Environmental Quality to integrate TMDLs into future water quality conservation efforts
  • Oversee development of a new 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to support additional conservation work in the Madison Valley.

Conducting Natural Resource Monitoring & Providing Technical Assistance

  • Managing the Madison Stream Team, a citizen science water monitoring program working with volunteers, and fundraising for future resource monitoring efforts
  • Overseeing and maintaining the Madison Conservation District’s network of continuous streamflow monitoring stations
  • Providing support to applicants, MCD Board, and MCD staff for 310 application permits
  • Providing support to homeowners and residents for drinking water quality testing through “Well Educated” program
  • Providing general support and knowledge for landowner and resident inquiries pertaining to natural resources and conservation

Outreach, Partnerships, and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Overseeing daily operations of the Madison Conservation District, and working with MCD Board of Supervisors to implement strategic planning initiatives
  • Attending and organizing monthly MCD Board meetings
  • Writing grants, and managing fundraising initiatives, to support program and projects
  • Representing MCD in local, regional, and state partnerships
  • Organizing educational opportunities for residents, including workshops, tours, and public meetings
  • Engaging residents and partners through outreach and communications strategies
  • Tracking progress, and updating MCD’s strategic plan and annual work plans
  • Understanding organization finances, and assisting MCD Board of Supervisors in developing annual budget
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned by MCD Board of Supervisors


The ideal candidate is flexible and self-starting, and provides a strong sense of customer service. Maintaining and building partnerships is a priority, and this position requires strong communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications Include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in resource management, range management, conservation, hydrology, or some related field
  • Experience conducting field work, particularly water and streamflow measurements
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to foster partnerships and relationships at the local, regional, and state scale
  • Computer and technical skills, including ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, Word Press, and social media platforms

Preferred Qualifications Include:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in natural resource management or conservation field
  • Knowledge and experience with Montana’s Natural Streambed and Land Preservation Act (310 Law)
  • Experience conducting natural resource education and outreach initiatives
  • Experience working with 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations

Compensation: Salary of $38,000 – $43,000 annually DOE (potential for pay increase after 6-month probationary period).
